The tropical Atlantic upper-ocean circulation experiences multiannual to decadal changes associated with different climate modes and is simultaneously adjusting warming. most energetic current in the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC), which flows eastwards along Equator. On basis of long-term moored observations, we show that EUC strengthened by more than 20% from 2008 2018. intensification increasing subsurface oxygen concentrations a thickening oxygenated layer equatorial Atlantic. These counteract climate-warming-induced deoxygenation region. strengthening found be mainly forced trade wind western North A 60-yr dataset reveals recent increase upper multidecadal variability. This variability characterized low 1990s early 2000s, high 1960s 1970s. observed seems linked compression expansion habitat pelagic fish, must accounted for when evaluating possible consequences marine ecosystems fisheries.
